Essential Upsell & Cross Sell vs Shopify Search & Discoveryfor Shopify (2026)
Essential Upsell & Cross Sell and Shopify Search & Discovery both aim to increase AOV through upsells and cross-sells, but approach the problem from different angles. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell focuses primarily on increasing AOV through strategic product recommendations and bundling, aiming to directly influence the purchase decision with post-purchase upsells, automatic discounts and frequently bought together (FBT) suggestions on product pages and in the cart. It is a dedicated solution for maximizing upsell and cross-sell opportunities. Shopify Search & Discovery, on the other hand, takes a more holistic approach, focusing on improving the overall shopping experience through enhanced search functionality and product discovery. While it also offers related product recommendations, its core strengths lie in helping customers find the right products through customized search filters, synonym groups, and product boosts. This app seeks to increase AOV by ensuring shoppers find what they are looking for more easily, and discover complementary items within the search process. Its recommendations are integrated into the broader shopping experience. The app also provides analytics to improve the merchant's strategy. The key distinction lies in their primary focus. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is a dedicated upsell/cross-sell engine, whereas Shopify Search & Discovery is a general search and discovery tool with upsell/cross-sell features.
