BYOB ‑ Build Your Own Bundles vs Essential Upsell & Cross Sellfor Shopify (2026)
BYOB ‑ Build Your Own Bundles focuses on allowing customers to create personalized bundles on a dedicated page, emphasizing a 'build your own box' experience. Its primary strength lies in its ease of use and customization within the Shopify theme editor, with no coding required. It's positioned as a solution for merchants looking to boost AOV through customer-defined bundles, suitable for seasonal promotions and gift sets. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell, on the other hand, offers a broader range of upsell and cross-sell features, including frequently bought together products, related product recommendations, and post-purchase upsells. It aims to improve AOV by presenting relevant products and promotions at various stages of the customer journey, from product page to cart drawer and even after purchase. The core difference lies in their approach to AOV boosting. BYOB offers a structured bundle-building experience controlled by the customer, while Essential Upsell utilizes automated recommendations and offers based on product relationships and purchase history. While both apps aim to increase AOV, they cater to different merchant needs. BYOB is ideal for stores with products that naturally complement each other and can be easily mixed and matched into custom bundles. Essential Upsell is better suited for stores with diverse product catalogs that benefit from automated cross-selling and upselling strategies. Our Verdict
For merchants prioritizing customer choice and easy setup, BYOB ‑ Build Your Own Bundles is the better option. Its simplicity and focus on letting customers create their ideal bundles is a strong selling point. Businesses with complementary products that customers would naturally want to combine will see the most benefit. This is great for holiday and gift-giving opportunities where customers like to customize present packages.
However, for merchants looking for a comprehensive, automated solution that leverages data-driven recommendations and offers upsells and cross-sells throughout the customer journey, Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is the superior choice. While it may require more configuration, its wide range of features and proven track record (based on the large number of positive reviews) makes it a powerful tool for boosting AOV. If you aren't offering bundles directly related to one another but would like cross-selling capabilities, Essential Upsell is the better choice.
