Product Extra Info vs SMART Variant Descriptionsfor Shopify (2026)
Product Extra Info and SMART Variant Descriptions both aim to enhance product information on Shopify stores using the metafields category, but they address different merchant needs. Product Extra Info focuses on adding custom fields to *all* products without coding, targeting non-technical users who need to display specifications, sizing guides, or other general information. It handles various data types like text, numbers, images, dates, and URLs. SMART Variant Descriptions, on the other hand, concentrates specifically on providing unique descriptions for each *variant* of a product. It aims to simplify product information and enhance clarity for customers, which is crucial for stores with variants that differ significantly. The primary difference lies in their scope: Product Extra Info offers broad custom field additions applicable store-wide, bypassing traditional metafield configuration. SMART Variant Descriptions are more targeted, focusing exclusively on variant-specific information. Product Extra Info also boasts a theme-friendly integration, suggesting visual customization capabilities, while SMART Variant Descriptions emphasizes an improved shopping experience and increased conversions by providing tailored variant details. Based on the available data, user confidence currently appears to be much higher with SMART Variant Descriptions, evidenced by its 5/5 rating and positive reviews, while Product Extra Info lacks any user feedback.

Our Verdict
For merchants needing to add consistent extra information across all products (e.g., materials, warranty information) without coding, Product Extra Info seems promising, *if* it delivers on its promises of ease of use and dynamic updating. However, its lack of reviews is a significant risk. For stores where product *variants* differ substantially and require unique descriptions to avoid customer confusion and drive conversions, SMART Variant Descriptions is the clear winner. Its 5-star rating and customer reviews strongly suggest it effectively addresses this specific need.
Given the absence of reviews for Product Extra Info, it's difficult to recommend it without significant reservations. Merchants should proceed with extreme caution and potentially seek out alternative apps with established positive feedback. If the need is specifically unique variant descriptions, SMART Variant Descriptions is the better choice given the current data.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to use?
Product Extra Info aims to be easier by eliminating metafield setup. However, without reviews, it's impossible to definitively say. SMART Variant Descriptions likely has a steeper learning curve due to its variant-specific focus, but its positive reviews suggest it is manageable.
Does Product Extra Info work with all themes?
The app description states it has theme-friendly integration, suggesting a high level of compatibility, but this should be confirmed before purchasing since the rating and review information cannot validate it.
Which app is better for SEO?
SMART Variant Descriptions likely provides more SEO benefits because of the unique variant descriptions. This can help each variant rank for specific keywords. Product Extra Info may improve SEO indirectly through richer product information, but the impact is less direct.
Can SMART Variant Descriptions add extra fields, or just descriptions?
Based on the description, SMART Variant Descriptions is focused solely on adding unique *descriptions* to variants. It does not appear to support other types of custom fields.
Which app is better for a store with clothing that has different sizes and colors?
SMART Variant Descriptions is better. Being able to explicitly state the material, fit, and care instructions for each unique color and size will give the customer all the information needed to purchase. Product Extra Info is better suited for adding universal disclaimers or information that will apply to all items sold.
