MIT Payment Hider vs TryOnify: Try Before You Buyfor Shopify (2026)
MIT Payment Hider and TryOnify: Try Before You Buy both fall under the 'Payment options - Other' Shopify category, but address vastly different needs. MIT Payment Hider focuses on customizing the checkout experience by allowing merchants to hide, sort, or rename payment methods based on various conditions. This caters to merchants needing granular control over payment options presented to specific customer segments or under specific circumstances. Conversely, TryOnify: Try Before You Buy introduces a 'Try Now, Pay Later' model, enabling merchants to offer free trials to customers without immediate payment, aiming to boost conversions and customer acquisition. The core difference lies in their approach to payments. MIT Payment Hider is about optimizing existing payment options to reduce checkout friction, while TryOnify introduces a new payment model altogether, focusing on removing initial payment barriers to encourage purchases. MIT Payment Hider appears to target merchants with sophisticated payment customization needs driven by complex operational requirements or segmented customer bases. TryOnify is designed for merchants seeking a competitive edge by offering a risk-free trial period, particularly those selling products where a try-before-you-buy experience is valuable. Furthermore, the rating and review count suggest TryOnify has some early traction and positive feedback, while MIT Payment Hider lacks social proof.

Our Verdict
For merchants prioritizing a streamlined and customized checkout experience with existing payment gateways, and who have specific needs around payment method visibility based on customer segments, cart conditions, or other rules, MIT Payment Hider could be beneficial, *if* it gains reviews and proves reliable. However, the lack of reviews and a zero rating in 2026 is a significant red flag.
On the other hand, TryOnify: Try Before You Buy is ideal for merchants seeking to boost conversions and attract new customers by offering a risk-free trial period. The 'Try Now, Pay Later' model is particularly suitable for products where customers value trying before committing to a purchase. Given the early positive reviews, TryOnify appears to be the more compelling choice for merchants looking to innovate their payment strategy and reduce checkout friction through a different approach.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
TryOnify claims to have 'Quick & easy setup,' suggesting a simpler implementation process compared to MIT Payment Hider, which likely requires more configuration to define custom payment hiding rules. However, user reviews are the best source of truth for ease of use and MIT Payment Hider has none.
Which app is better for reducing cart abandonment?
Both apps *aim* to reduce cart abandonment but through different means. TryOnify directly addresses a key reason for abandonment (payment hesitation) by offering a free trial. MIT Payment Hider can indirectly reduce abandonment by simplifying the payment options presented, but its impact is contingent on the merchant's specific checkout pain points.
Which app requires more ongoing maintenance?
MIT Payment Hider might require more ongoing maintenance as merchants need to adjust the hiding conditions based on changing customer segments, product offerings, or market dynamics. TryOnify's automatic payment collection feature could reduce ongoing manual intervention.
Which app is more scalable?
The scalability of both apps depends on their underlying architecture and performance. TryOnify's ability to handle a large volume of trial orders and automatic payment collections is crucial for scalability. MIT Payment Hider's scalability depends on its ability to efficiently process complex payment hiding rules for a growing customer base.
Does either app integrate with other payment gateways?
The provided information doesn't explicitly mention integration with specific payment gateways for either app. However, MIT Payment Hider inherently works *with* existing payment gateways by controlling their visibility. TryOnify may implicitly integrate as a payment option on top of existing gateways but the information is not explicitly shared.
