Essential Free Shipping Upsell vs Payflow: COD & Payment Methodsfor Shopify (2026)
Essential Free Shipping Upsell and Payflow: COD & Payment Methods address distinct aspects of the Shopify checkout and cart experience. Essential Free Shipping Upsell focuses on boosting Average Order Value (AOV) by incentivizing customers to spend more to qualify for free shipping or other rewards using a progress bar. It targets merchants aiming to increase sales through strategic upselling and cross-selling opportunities presented within the cart and product pages. The app's core value proposition centers around optimizing the customer journey to maximize revenue potential. Its strength lies in its focus on AOV and providing visually engaging cues for shoppers. Payflow, on the other hand, caters to merchants who need advanced control over payment and delivery options, specifically Cash on Delivery (COD). This app streamlines COD management, including adding fees, and allows merchants to customize the payment and delivery methods presented to customers based on a wide array of conditions (price, weight, tags, etc.). Payflow's primary focus is on optimizing the checkout process by providing a seamless and controlled environment for payment and delivery selection. It excels in providing fine-grained control and improving operational efficiency related to payment handling.

Our Verdict
If your primary goal is to increase Average Order Value (AOV) and encourage customers to spend more per purchase, Essential Free Shipping Upsell is the clear choice. Its progress bar and upselling features are designed specifically for this purpose. The higher rating and significantly larger number of reviews suggest a wider acceptance and effectiveness in achieving this objective.
However, if you need precise control over payment and delivery options, particularly Cash on Delivery (COD), Payflow: COD & Payment Methods is the more suitable option. It provides robust customization and conditional logic for managing payment and delivery methods, addressing logistical and operational challenges related to COD transactions. Consider Payflow if you need to streamline and optimize your checkout process based on factors beyond just order value.
