Doran: Draft Orders for POS vs Materials Inventoryfor Shopify (2026)
Doran: Draft Orders for POS and Materials Inventory, while both falling under the "Inventory optimization" category, target drastically different merchant needs and business models. Doran focuses on streamlining the draft order process specifically for Point of Sale (POS) systems. Its primary strength lies in its ability to transfer draft orders between Shopify Admin and POS, saving time for merchants who heavily utilize both. It is designed to improve efficiency in managing custom orders, discounts, and line item properties directly within the POS environment. Materials Inventory, on the other hand, caters to makers and manufacturers by providing comprehensive raw materials and finished product inventory management. Its core value proposition is helping merchants track material costs, product profitability, and prevent stockouts or overselling. It prioritizes real-time inventory synchronization, purchase order creation, and low inventory alerts, enabling informed decision-making regarding material procurement and production planning. The target audience is businesses that manufacture products from raw materials and need precise inventory control to maintain profitability.

Our Verdict
For merchants who extensively use Shopify POS and frequently deal with draft orders requiring customizations or specific discounts, Doran: Draft Orders for POS offers a potentially valuable solution, however the lack of reviews raises concerns about reliability and usability. Conversely, Materials Inventory is the clear choice for makers and manufacturers managing raw materials and finished product inventory. Its proven track record (5/5 rating with 49 reviews) and feature set focused on cost tracking, purchase orders, and real-time inventory updates make it a much more reliable and suitable option for its target audience.
If a merchant is purely focused on inventory accuracy and cost management in a manufacturing environment, Materials Inventory is the stronger recommendation due to its established user base and feature set. Doran should only be considered after thorough testing and evaluation, given the absence of any user feedback.
