Dataships Checkout Opt‑in vs TapOnIt ‑ Automated SMS & MMSfor Shopify (2026)
Dataships Checkout Opt‑in and TapOnIt ‑ Automated SMS & MMS both aim to enhance revenue through SMS marketing on Shopify, but their approaches and target audiences differ significantly. Dataships focuses on acquiring email and SMS subscribers *at the checkout* by optimizing consent forms and ensuring privacy compliance based on visitor location. Its core strength lies in building a compliant and engaged list from the point of sale. Dataships caters to merchants prioritizing privacy and needing dynamic consent management, particularly those operating internationally or with stringent data protection requirements. TapOnIt, on the other hand, concentrates on post-acquisition engagement through automated SMS and MMS campaigns. It uses behavior-triggered texts like abandoned cart reminders and low inventory alerts to boost conversions and AOV. A key differentiator is its emphasis on visual campaigns, allowing merchants to send multi-image texts. TapOnIt is geared towards merchants who already have a subscriber base and want to leverage SMS/MMS for direct sales and customer retention through visually appealing and automated messaging. The small number of reviews for TapOnIt, however, makes it difficult to assess its overall reliability compared to Dataships with its much larger review volume.

Our Verdict
For merchants who are primarily focused on building a compliant and effective email/SMS list, especially if operating in regions with strict privacy laws, Dataships Checkout Opt‑in is the stronger choice. The dynamic consent widget and Klaviyo integration provide valuable tools for managing subscriber data and compliance. Its focus on checkout optimization is a significant advantage for initial acquisition.
However, if a merchant already has a solid subscriber list and wants to directly drive sales through automated and visually appealing SMS/MMS campaigns, TapOnIt ‑ Automated SMS & MMS is likely the better option. Its strengths lie in post-acquisition engagement and conversion. The small number of reviews for TapOnIt, though, warrants caution and a thorough trial period to assess its performance and reliability before committing long-term.
