Dataships Checkout Opt‑in vs HiTide: Grow your SMS Listfor Shopify (2026)
Dataships Checkout Opt‑in and HiTide: Grow your SMS List both aim to increase SMS opt-ins for Shopify merchants, but they approach this goal from different angles. Dataships focuses on optimizing the checkout process itself, leveraging dynamic consent forms and compliance tools to capture email and SMS opt-ins during the purchase journey. This makes it well-suited for merchants prioritizing compliance and direct acquisition at the point of sale. It's more about converting existing traffic into subscribers. HiTide, on the other hand, concentrates on leveraging Instagram DM automation to acquire new SMS subscribers, particularly through campaigns like giveaways and early access events. HiTide caters more to merchants seeking to expand their reach and attract new customers through social media engagement. The core difference lies in the acquisition channel. Dataships improves opt-in rates for existing customers going through checkout, emphasizing compliance and optimized forms based on location. HiTide acquires net-new customers directly via Instagram DM, emphasizing list growth through engagement campaigns. While both can contribute to a larger SMS marketing list, their strategies, integrations, and target merchant profiles differ significantly. Merchants need to carefully consider where they want to acquire SMS subscribers and how they align with their existing marketing strategies. The choice depends on whether a merchant wants to boost existing conversions during checkout (Dataships) or attract new subscribers through social media campaigns (HiTide).

Our Verdict
For Shopify merchants primarily focused on optimizing their existing customer journey and ensuring robust compliance at checkout, Dataships Checkout Opt‑in is the superior choice. Its dynamic consent forms, detailed audit logs, and Klaviyo integration provide a comprehensive solution for acquiring and managing SMS subscribers during the purchase process. It's well-suited for businesses prioritizing a privacy-conscious and conversion-focused approach.
However, if a merchant's primary focus is aggressively growing their SMS list through social media engagement, particularly on Instagram, HiTide: Grow your SMS List is the better option. Its Instagram DM automation, campaign templates, and integration with a wider range of SMS platforms make it ideal for running giveaways, early access events, and other initiatives designed to attract new subscribers from social channels. HiTide shines for brands with a strong Instagram presence looking to translate social engagement into valuable SMS leads.
