Our Verdict
For merchants primarily concerned with streamlining their purchase order process, automating inventory management, and integrating with accounting systems, Auto Purchase Orders is the clear choice. Its features are specifically designed to optimize procurement and vendor communication. However, for merchants seeking a flexible automation tool to trigger actions and notifications based on a wide array of Shopify events, allowing for custom emails, file sending, and data manipulation, Notifications by Modd Apps provides a more versatile solution.
If your business needs robust PO management and accounting integration, Auto Purchase Orders is the better pick. If you prioritize event-driven notifications and custom automation workflows across your entire Shopify store, Notifications by Modd Apps will likely be more suitable. In essence, one focuses on optimizing the *what* (purchase orders), while the other optimizes the *when* and *how* (notifications and actions) in your store operations.
Common Questions
Which app offers direct integration with accounting software?
Auto Purchase Orders offers direct synchronization with Xero and QuickBooks, while Notifications by Modd Apps does not list any direct accounting integrations.
Can I use both apps together to improve my workflow?
Yes, it is possible. Auto Purchase Orders could manage the PO process, and Notifications by Modd Apps could notify staff or vendors upon PO creation or inventory receipt, providing complementary functionality. However, be mindful of potential overlap and complexity in configuration.
Which app is better for a dropshipping business?
Auto Purchase Orders is specifically designed for dropshipping, offering auto-generation of dropship POs from Shopify orders and features for splitting orders across multiple vendors. Notifications by Modd Apps could be used to notify the dropshipper when an order is placed, but it's not specifically tailored to dropshipping workflows in the same way.
Does either app allow for custom branding in the emails sent?
While both apps allow for customizable emails, Notifications by Modd Apps explicitly mentions extensive customization using HTML and Liquid. Auto Purchase Orders allows customization of PO templates (PDF/CSV), suggesting branding options within those templates, and forwarding via custom domain. However, the level of email customization specifically using HTML may be less than Notifications.
Which app is easier to set up and use for a non-technical user?
This is subjective. Auto Purchase Orders likely requires a slightly higher technical understanding of purchase orders and inventory management processes. Notifications by Modd Apps could be easier for simpler notification setups, but the power of its complex logic using Liquid might be overwhelming for a beginner. Both apps highlight responsive support, indicating they are aware of the potential learning curve. Without user testing, it's difficult to definitively say which has a simpler user experience.
